The Los Angeles Rams faced an early challenge in the NFL season when they hosted the New York Giants in Monday Night Football without two important players, Myles Garrett and Puka Nacua.
The Rams entered the game after a difficult 27-7 defeat against the San Francisco 49ers in their season opener. The loss was followed by another setback when defensive end Myles Garrett underwent knee surgery and was placed on injured reserve, leaving the team without a confirmed timetable for his return.
The Rams also had concerns about star wide receiver Puka Nacua. He was dealing with a hip and groin issue and missed practice late in the week. Nacua was eventually ruled out of the game, adding another significant absence to Los Angeles' offense.
Nacua had been an important part of the Rams' passing attack. He recorded five receptions for 74 yards in the season-opening loss to San Francisco. His absence meant quarterback Matthew Stafford had to rely more heavily on other receivers, including veteran Davante Adams, along with the team's tight ends.
The Giants entered the matchup with a more positive start to the season. New York defeated the Dallas Cowboys 28-20 in Week 1, with the offense controlling possession for more than 36 minutes. Tight end Isaiah Likely also made a strong impact, catching eight passes for 78 yards and two touchdowns.
For the Rams, the game carried added importance because another defeat would have left them with an 0-2 record. The team was also competing in a difficult NFC West division where the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers had already started the season 2-0.
Despite the injuries, the Rams were still expected to have enough talent to compete with New York. The return of veteran defensive star Aaron Donald was another storyline heading into the matchup, while the Giants were looking to build on their strong opening-week performance.
The matchup therefore became an early test for both teams: the Rams were looking to recover from a disappointing opening week and cope with major injuries, while the Giants aimed to continue their positive start under new head coach John Harbaugh.
